Simple Proof, a company specializing in bitcoin-based document timestamping, has recently formalized partnerships with El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment. This collaboration aims to secure government records through Bitcoin blockchain technology.

The announcement occurred during the Bitcoin Histórico conference held at the National Theatre in San Salvador, where CEO Carlos Toriello presented alongside Peter Todd, the creator of OpenTimestamps and a contributor to Bitcoin Core.

This initiative underscores El Salvador’s ongoing commitment to utilizing Bitcoin technology beyond traditional financial applications. Both ministries have commenced the registration of official documents on the Bitcoin blockchain, making verified records publicly accessible via designated government portals.

The company has successfully executed multiple pilot programs in the past, including initiatives in Screven County, Georgia, in the United States, as well as in Guatemala, where it notably influenced the 2023 elections.

This deployment signifies a continuation of Simple Proof’s prior efforts in El Salvador, where graduation certificates from the CUBO+ program became the first public documents in the nation registered via the Bitcoin blockchain.

Timestamped documents from the Ministry of Environment, including national reports and public files, are accessible at blockchain.ambiente.gob.sv. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides verification of institutional reports and records at rree.gob.sv/logros-y-memorias.

Peter Todd, in the same press release, emphasized, “With a single transaction, we can protect millions of documents without congesting the network or altering its monetary function,” explaining that the system records only cryptographic hashes rather than the documents themselves on the Bitcoin network.

This project positions El Salvador as a global exemplar in the application of blockchain technology for governmental information management, thereby enhancing transparency and public trust in democratic institutions and processes by mitigating the potential for document tampering.
