The Federal Reserve opted to keep its benchmark rate unchanged on Wednesday, maintaining the federal funds target range at 3.75% to 4%. In response, the bitcoin price displayed some volatility around the $81,000 mark.

The decision was passed with a vote of 10-2, and the dissenting votes carry significant implications. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack advocated for a quarter-point increase. This instance marks the first time since 1992 that both a Fed governor and a regional bank president have voiced dissent in unison.

Following the vote, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh addressed reporters, asserting that political considerations had no influence on the decision that coincides with the upcoming midterm elections. Warsh has previously indicated his disfavor for forward guidance unless a crisis arises, thereby compeling investors to interpret economic data independently.

The committee’s statement eliminated previous language regarding the potential for a rate hike to support a return to 2% inflation, replacing it with a line indicating that forthcoming information will guide the policy stance. Additionally, the Fed characterized growth as strong, rather than simply solid.

Indications suggest a tightening approach. Fed funds futures and the Fed’s dot plot appear to favor a rate increase by December, with some projections approximating the odds at three out of four. Current inflation rates are elevated, and the dissenting officials are those advocating for prompt action.

Reaction of Bitcoin Price

The reaction of the bitcoin price was relatively muted. Shortly after the announcement, it surged to approximately $81,700, subsequently dipped below $80,500, and then rebounded toward $81,000. Given that most traders anticipated this hold, the tempered movement was not unexpected.

Historically, Bitcoin’s initial response to Fed announcements tends to be modest, with a more definitive direction often emerging in the following day. Notably, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $110 million on October 26 and $176 million on October 27, indicating institutional investment interest despite the price fluctuations. Conversely, some observers noted that large holders have been taking advantage of market strength to sell.

This contention epitomizes the current state of the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin remains approximately one-third below its October 2025 record of nearly $126,000. The trajectory of rate hikes poses a challenge for an asset that has historically benefitted from low-interest rates, prompting the market to adjust to the likelihood that the era of inexpensive money may have concluded.

Some traders perceive the decision to hold rates as a sign that the Fed will adopt a cautious approach moving forward, while others believe that December will serve as a more significant test. At present, the key threshold to monitor is the $80,000 mark for Bitcoin, which has recently enforced support. A definitive break below this level could expose subsequent support levels.

Warsh and his colleague emphasized the need to await incoming data prior to making any decisions. Bitcoin, along with other market participants, must similarly exercise patience.

Upcoming Midterm Elections

The forthcoming political landscape for Bitcoin will come to a head on November 3, as voters nationwide cast their ballots. Thus far, cryptocurrency has not significantly influenced the campaign discussions.

The crypto industry has invested roughly $176 million on more than 100 midterm races in an effort to cultivate a bipartisan coalition in Congress aimed at safeguarding its interests following the departure of President Donald Trump from office. Fairshake, the industry’s largest super PAC, spearheaded this initiative and developed strategies similar to those implemented during the 2024 cycle.

As of the time of this writing, the bitcoin price stands at $81,478.
