Citigroup is entering into a strategic partnership with Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, as part of its latest blockchain initiative.
In a joint statement released on Monday, the two firms announced their collaboration aimed at facilitating the transition between traditional currencies and stablecoins for Citi’s clients, eliminating the need for these businesses to independently develop or manage both banking and cryptocurrency systems.
This announcement emerges as financial institutions globally increasingly adopt the underlying technology of Bitcoin to streamline their operations and better serve clients interested in cryptocurrency.
Last month, Citi indicated plans to enable institutional investors to hold both traditional assets and Bitcoin within a unified framework, thus avoiding the necessity for separate systems later this year.
Debopama Sen, Head of Payments Services at Citi, stated, “Our clients operate in an increasingly fast-paced and complex global economy, and we’re focused on delivering the solutions they need.” She further emphasized that the objective is to create a “next generation of payments infrastructure—one that is seamless, interoperable, and operates across both traditional and digital payment instruments and networks.”
According to the announcement, the agreement comprises two primary components. First, Coinbase Virtual Accounts, constructed on Citi’s banking-as-a-service platform, will equip Coinbase’s payment customers with bank-account-like functionalities, allowing them to accept, hold, and transfer funds. Citi will provide the regulated banking infrastructure that facilitates the automatic conversion of incoming fiat currency to stablecoins.
Secondly, the Spring by Citi merchant platform will leverage Coinbase’s infrastructure, enabling Citi’s enterprise clients to accept stablecoin payments at the point of sale. Coinbase will convert the stablecoins into fiat currency, and Citi will handle the settlement of the funds, ensuring that merchants are not required to manage or hold cryptocurrency directly.
Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Product at Coinbase, remarked, “Fintechs building on Coinbase have always needed a fast, compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins, and Citi gives us that at scale.”
Coinbase and Citi first announced their partnership last year, aimed at enhancing digital asset payment capabilities for institutional clients.
Citi currently offers a range of blockchain-related services, including Citi Token Services, which facilitates real-time cross-border payments using tokenized deposits.
Since last year, the firm has been collaborating with other leading banks such as Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America to explore the issuance of a stablecoin product.
