In its third-quarter financial results, Coinbase experienced a mixed performance. The reported revenue amounted to $1.20 billion, falling short of analysts’ expectations of $1.233 billion, as indicated by the company’s filings. However, the subscription and services segment showed positive growth, achieving $570 million in revenue. The firm’s financial standing remains significantly linked to trading activities, although there are signs of an upward trend in recurring revenues.

The Monthly Transacting Users (MTU) declined to 7.4 million, a decrease from 9.3 million in the same period last year. During the earnings call, Coinbase attributed this decline to adverse overall market conditions. Notably, the company’s share of the crypto trading volume increased to 10.7%, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of gains, which suggests the platform is successfully capturing market share despite the prevailing quieter sentiment in the broader market.

Adjusted EBITDA reached $332.9 million, continuing a streak of 15 consecutive quarters of profitability based on this measure. Furthermore, the prediction markets segment crossed the $200 million threshold in annualized revenue, while the Coinbase One initiative recorded a peak number of subscribers.

Coinbase CEO Plans for Share Sales

In other news, recent filings released on October 30 indicate that CEO Brian Armstrong has established a plan to sell up to 8.17 million Class A shares. This plan, initiated in August under SEC Rule 10b5-1, allows executives to schedule share sales in advance. The sale period is projected to extend from November 16 through October 2027, contingent upon stock price conditions. Additionally, co-founder Fred Ehrsam and President Emilie Choi have arranged similar plans, collectively bringing the total shares to approximately 13.6 million.

Armstrong’s decision to initiate these sales is not unprecedented. Analyst Matthew Sigel from VanEck identified that Armstrong had previously conducted sales totaling around $545.7 million over a period of nine months starting from April 2025. Armstrong has clarified that these transactions are part of a risk management strategy and should not be construed as negative signals regarding the company’s future.

Coinbase Stock Experiences Significant Decline

Today, Coinbase shares (COIN) experienced a decline of approximately 15%, although this drop cannot be entirely attributed to the recent earnings report.

On October 29, Binance announced a substantial security breach, estimating losses at $6.3 billion, which is now recorded as the largest theft in the cryptocurrency sector. To date, around $3 billion in assets have been frozen, with industry partners assisting in these efforts.

The breach has been reportedly linked to perpetrators associated with North Korea; however, Binance has not confirmed the attack’s origin. The exchange maintains that there is no evidence to suggest a compromised wallet private key.

Binance has stated that it retains $6.34 billion in reserves to address any losses. Furthermore, customer deposits remain secure, and the company anticipates resuming withdrawals within 48 hours. Current figures are preliminary, and estimates may vary slightly among different sources.

The market reacted promptly to these developments, resulting in Bitcoin’s price dropping approximately 4.5%, falling below $77,000. Concurrently, shares of MicroStrategy (MSTR) saw a decline of nearly 10%, while shares of Strive (ASST) fell over 12% at times. Overall, Coinbase’s stock has decreased by more than 55% over the course of the year.
