A recently released feature documentary posits that Bitcoin deserves a place within the boardrooms of professional basketball, supported by substantial access and insights.
Titled Bitcoin Season and directed by Mike Nicoll, the film chronicles Swan Bitcoin—an American Bitcoin exchange—as it endeavors to forge Bitcoin-only partnerships within the professional basketball arena. The documentary highlights Swan’s pioneering deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, noted as the first Bitcoin-only partnership in the NBA, alongside a separate arrangement with Klutch Sports Group, the player agency established by Rich Paul, which represents numerous prominent athletes in the sport.
The narrative of the film reframes Bitcoin not merely as a financial instrument, but as a means of empowering athletes at a time when they are increasingly asserting dominion over their careers, personal brands, and financial futures.
Former NBA guard Matthew Dellavedova, featured in the documentary, described it as “a blueprint” for franchises, leagues, and athletes aspiring to redefine their core values beyond financial metrics.
“[Bitcoin Season] demonstrates that Bitcoin has the potential to transform not only balance sheets but also what organizations stand for and the legacy they leave behind. We are now in the player-empowerment era, and owning Bitcoin is an integral aspect of that,” Dellavedova stated.
The documentary features expert commentary from notable figures such as Michael Saylor, Lyn Alden, Adam Back, Max Keiser, Pierre Rochard, Greg Foss, and Natalie Brunell, in addition to executives from both the Cavaliers and Klutch organizations.
The principal thesis of the film asserts that in an age where traditional financial models are diminishing, utilizing Bitcoin as a store of value emerges as a strategic advantage for both athletes and institutions.
Nicoll, an experienced director in the realm of basketball documentaries, previously released At All Costs in 2017, which was acquired by Netflix and drew favorable comparisons to Hoop Dreams by the LA Times. His subsequent film, The Spoils: Selling the Future of American Basketball, debuted at the NBA Summer League Film Festival in June 2024 and garnered accolades from renowned filmmaker Ken Burns. Bitcoin Season had its premiere on June 3, 2026, in San Clemente, California, with a hosting presentation by Cory Klippsten, founder and CEO of Swan. A preview screening is set for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas on July 18.
