British multinational Standard Chartered has entered into an agreement to acquire digital asset custodian Zodia Custody, a strategic move that follows an earlier announcement regarding the transaction.

In a statement released by Zodia Custody, headquartered in London, it was noted that this acquisition will facilitate the integration of Zodia’s services into Standard Chartered’s pre-existing digital asset custody operations.

Standard Chartered is actively broadening its cryptocurrency-related offerings on a global scale. Recently, the bank disclosed its intention to introduce crypto custody services tailored for institutional clients located in Singapore. Currently, such services are already available in the UAE, Luxembourg, and Hong Kong.

Richard Clark, CEO of Zodia Custody, remarked, “As institutional adoption of digital assets accelerates, custody is increasingly becoming part of the global banking landscape.”

He further emphasized that “Zodia Custody has built a strong business with the specialist expertise and capabilities to meet the needs of institutional clients. Combining that expertise with Standard Chartered’s global reach and established banking platform will enhance its digital asset custody offerings and provide institutions with improved access to reliable, regulated custody services globally.”

Ying Ying Tan, global head of securities services and digital assets at Standard Chartered, stated that this acquisition “further deepens our digital asset custody portfolio and reinforces our position as a leading provider of digital asset services on a global scale.”

Approval for Standard Chartered’s acquisition of Zodia Custody was granted by the company’s shareholders in May.

Zodia Custody specializes in the custody of Bitcoin and various other digital assets for institutional clients and asset managers.

In recent years, Standard Chartered has made significant inroads into the cryptocurrency sector. In 2025, the bank established a trading desk for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in London, positioning itself among the pioneering global banks to engage in spot cryptocurrency trading.

Subsequently, the bank has launched custody and trading services across multiple countries worldwide.

A growing number of major banks globally are either introducing or planning to introduce crypto custody services, with financial institutions such as State Street, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bank, and Citigroup committing to direct crypto custody in the past 18 months.

Crypto custody frequently serves as an entry point for banks venturing into the digital asset arena, exemplified by BNY Mellon, which became the first major U.S. bank to offer digital asset custody services in 2022.
