According to a recent report by Chainalysis, the United States is strategically accumulating Bitcoin while simultaneously exporting dollar-pegged stablecoins to the global market.

In its Wednesday report titled “North America: Inside the Growth of Agentic Commerce,” Chainalysis indicates that the U.S. has emerged as a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026, marking a significant shift that has not occurred since 2022.

The data reveals that institutions have been actively purchasing Bitcoin this year, while retail investors have predominantly been selling.

The report states, “A dollar stablecoin is a way to hold dollars without an American bank account, and Americans already have one.”

Furthermore, it highlights that “the rest of the world is pivoting to a digital dollar because it meets a need that American users don’t share. Meanwhile, Americans are leaning harder on Bitcoin as an infinitely scarce store of value.”

The U.S. dominance in the Bitcoin market continues to rise—since the launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in 2024, America’s share of global Bitcoin activity has increased with each reporting period. This trend persists even as the overall U.S. cryptocurrency market, valued at $2.78 trillion, contracted by 2.2% amid a challenging bear market, ultimately retaining much of the growth experienced in 2025.

In January 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved Bitcoin ETFs after a decade of resistance to such products.

Managed by prominent financial institutions such as BlackRock, Fidelity, and more recently, Morgan Stanley, these funds achieved the most successful debut in ETF history.

The approval allows institutions and Wall Street investors to purchase shares of funds that track Bitcoin prices while managing the complexities of buying and selling the digital asset.

According to the report, the introduction of ETFs has notably advanced the maturity of the cryptocurrency sector and has positioned the U.S. as a more prominent investor in Bitcoin.

Meanwhile, stablecoins have catalyzed U.S. debt into a “currency-of-choice for peer-to-peer economies and businesses operating across borders.”

The report further notes, “In 2026, we continued to see stablecoins entering new use cases, particularly abroad, benefiting U.S. companies and the government with billions of dollars in economic activity.”

Since the commencement of Donald Trump’s presidency, several pro-cryptocurrency laws and executive orders have been enacted. Notably, the GENIUS Act, signed in 2025, permits banks and other entities to issue stablecoins, provided they back these tokens with assets such as U.S. Treasuries and maintain monthly disclosures of their reserves.
