UBS, the largest bank in Switzerland, has reportedly expanded its exposure to Bitcoin, as indicated by recent regulatory filings.
The bank has acquired additional shares in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, elevating its overall investment to over $83 million, represented by 2.5 million shares, according to a submission to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
UBS has methodically increased its investment in the foremost cryptocurrency by market capitalization since the approval of BlackRock’s primary fund in 2024.

These filings exemplify a growing trend among traditional institutions aiming to gain exposure to Bitcoin. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) such as BlackRock’s Bitcoin Trust—traded under the ticker IBIT—enable investors to participate in the leading cryptocurrency market without the necessity of directly holding the digital asset.
Following the SEC’s approval of a variety of Bitcoin funds in January 2024, significant firms have capitalized on the opportunity to invest in the asset through regulated vehicles that are traded on stock exchanges.
BlackRock’s IBIT has emerged as the most successful cryptocurrency ETF, attracting more capital than any other crypto ETF and currently managing assets totaling approximately $47.3 billion.
Various pension funds and state entities in the U.S. have also sought exposure to Bitcoin through these ETFs, complementing their investments in traditional assets such as technology stocks and other equities.
In addition to its shares in IBIT, UBS’s regulatory submissions reveal that the bank possesses investments in other premium income and Bitcoin-related ETFs, bringing its overall cryptocurrency ETF holdings to approximately $90 million.
Furthermore, UBS has made investments in American Bitcoin Corp., a Bitcoin mining firm associated with the sons of former U.S. President Donald Trump, with a stake valued at just under $1.5 million.
Earlier this year, it was reported that UBS intends to offer Bitcoin trading services to a select group of private clients in Switzerland.
