Recent research indicates that U.S. investors are prioritizing the expansion of their bitcoin holdings over traditional stock investments.

Charles Schwab’s 2026 Modern Wealth Survey, released on Wednesday, highlighted that current cryptocurrency investors are eager to augment their portfolios.

The findings demonstrate that 60% of these investors intend to increase their cryptocurrency investments within the next year, surpassing the investment intentions for other asset classes, such as ETFs (56%), stocks (52%), bonds (42%), and mutual funds (41%).

Joe Vietri, the Head of Digital Assets at Charles Schwab, remarked, “Existing cryptocurrency investors are certainly leaning in, particularly younger investors who are driving much of the interest and momentum in cryptocurrency.”

He further emphasized that “the bigger story is that cryptocurrency is increasingly viewed as a complement to traditional investments.”

As the largest custodian for registered investment advisors in the United States, Charles Schwab has initiated a phased rollout of Schwab Crypto to retail clients earlier this year, thereby granting them direct access to bitcoin trading, along with educational resources and professional support.

Additionally, Schwab offers crypto-linked exchange-traded funds, bitcoin futures, and its own Schwab Crypto Thematic Index ETF. According to CEO Rick Wurster, Schwab clients hold over 20% of all crypto exchange-traded products in the market.

The report also noted that 20% of Americans currently own cryptocurrency, with an equal proportion expressing interest in making a purchase. Among investors specifically, nearly half are cryptocurrency holders.

Furthermore, millennials emerged as the demographic most likely to possess cryptocurrency, with ownership rates more than four times higher than that of Baby Boomers.

The online survey was executed by Logica Research from August 24 to September 17, 2026, involving a national sample of 2,000 Americans aged 21 to 75.
