According to Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, the Clarity Act is poised for passage, notwithstanding opposition from certain older Democratic lawmakers.

During an appearance on The Hill’s morning program, Rising, Shirzad articulated that cryptocurrency may represent a uniquely bipartisan issue within Washington.

Shirzad further noted that the hurdles facing this long-awaited legislation are primarily generational. He opined that younger Democratic members grasp the transformative potential of cryptocurrency in financial engagement and are thus more supportive of the initiative.

He stated, “A significant portion of the opposition is generational, concentrated among Democrats who resist it. However, younger members recognize the evolving nature of money and the necessity for adaptation, marking a generational shift.” Shirzad also emphasized that approximately 67 million Americans currently own cryptocurrency, asserting confidence in the bill’s prospects for approval.

At present, lawmakers are reviewing the latest draft of the Clarity Act, which seeks to solidify regulations surrounding digital assets. This draft includes provisions that prevent officials and their families from issuing or promoting cryptocurrency, addressing concerns previously raised by opposing lawmakers.

Nonetheless, some Democrats continue to express dissatisfaction with the bill’s current form, with a group stating that it falls short of expectations in a recent statement.

The bill has encountered delays this year, in part due to apprehensions voiced by banking leaders regarding stablecoin yields and ethical considerations. Banking lobbyists have indicated that attractive yields offered by cryptocurrency exchanges could undermine banks’ deposit bases.

In previous discussions, Shirzad characterized the Clarity Act as an “extraordinarily bipartisan” effort. If enacted, the legislation would establish a framework for cryptocurrency regulation in the world’s largest economy.
